More FAD Buoys for Recycling!

92 FAD buoys to be transformed into environmental remote-sensing buoys

Buoys from Cleanup

Following a cleanup at Île du Port, Seychelles, organised by the Spanish buoy manufacturer Marine Instruments and a local recycling firm, Brikole, OceanLabs has received a total of 92 decommissioned (non-functional) FAD buoys. As a member of Marine Instruments' Blue Recovery Programme, OceanLabs will transform these buoys into remote-sensing buoys, just like the one that Sergio Acevedo Iglesias and Daniel Hugelmann are holding. These automated devices will provide near-real-time data on our marine environment. In the scope of our upcoming BGF8 project with SeyCCAT we will explore how the data from a network of such buoys can benefit our local communities and artisanal fishermen. If successful, then we could help replicate such a remote-sensing network in other small island states.
